Chimney Repairs & Maintenance

Protecting Your Roof Integrity from the Top Down

Chimneys are often the most exposed and weather-beaten part of any roof, especially in London’s climate. Wind, rain, frost, and pollution all take their toll, and without regular maintenance, small cracks can lead to water ingress, internal damp, or even structural damage.

At Amber Shield Roofing, we provide expert chimney repair and maintenance services to restore both appearance and performance while protecting the surrounding roof structure.

Our Chimney Services

  • Chimney inspections and surveys

  • Brickwork and repointing

  • Lead flashing repair or replacement

  • Chimney pot replacement, capping, and venting

  • Partial or full chimney rebuilds

  • Preventative maintenance and leak repair

Our Process

1. Inspection & Assessment

We begin with a detailed visual and structural inspection, both from ground level and on-roof (where safe). We assess:

  • Brickwork condition (cracks, spalling, or weathering)

  • Mortar joints and pointing

  • Chimney pot alignment or damage

  • Flashing condition and leadwork integrity

For active chimneys, we can also inspect for liner damage, smoke leaks, or blockages.

We also use drones and thermal imaging for hard-to-access sites or pre-scaffold assessments.

2. Repointing & Brickwork Repair

Over time, mortar joints erode, allowing water to penetrate and freeze inside brickwork. Our team carefully removes decayed mortar and repoints using lime-based or cement mortars to match the existing structure.

  • Damaged bricks are replaced with matching materials.

  • Heritage properties are repaired with like-for-like materials to preserve authenticity.
Result: Restored structural strength and watertight integrity without compromising appearance.

3. Flashing Repair & Renewal

Lead flashing is a common leak point where the chimney meets the roof.
We check and repair all flashings, including step, apron, and back gutter sections.
Where needed, we install new lead or proprietary flashings, sealed to current codes of practice and compatible with slate, tile, or flat roofs.

Tip: After major storms, always have chimney flashings inspected to prevent unseen leaks.

4. Chimney Pot & Capping Services

Whether active or disused, the chimney top needs protection:

  • Active chimneys: Pots checked for alignment and stability; fitted with cowls to improve draft.

  • Disused chimneys: Professionally capped or vented to stop water ingress and nesting while allowing airflow.

We always confirm chimney use before capping and can coordinate with heating engineers where required.

5. Chimney Rebuilds

When a chimney stack is structurally unsafe or beyond repair, we offer partial or full rebuilds using reclaimed or matching bricks for seamless restoration.
Our rebuild service includes:

  • Scaffolding setup and safe dismantling

  • Rebuilding to correct height and flue specifications

  • Reinstallation of pots, flaunching, and new lead flashing
All work complies with UK Building Regulations and local safety standards.

6. Ongoing Chimney Maintenance

To extend the life of your chimney and roof:

  • Schedule annual chimney inspections

  • Check flashing and pointing after heavy storms

  • Maintain flaunching, pots, and guards in good condition

Our clients can opt into a seasonal maintenance plan, ensuring your chimney remains safe, functional, and watertight all year round.
